Tonite..I was thinking about a story that have been told to me earlier today..

This was a story about my fren who posted in Klinik Kesihatan Bukit Kuda for primary care medicine posting. It all starts with a 32 year old chinese lady coming in to the clinic to do checkup on blood glucose. She came in with unhappy look on her face, maybe she hates finger prickling. My friend, who incharge to prick this lady finger, starts to wear his glove, hold the lady’s hand and gently press the finger prick onto her finger. The fingerprick shape is just like a mechanical pencil with the button at the side. So, my friend put his index finger on the button and his thumb on the other side of the finger prick. He then explain to the lady that it won’t be a painful precedure.

The lady closed her eyes, getting ready. My friend press the button at the side and in sec, snap! My friend didn’t see any blood coming out from the patient’s finger, and instead, found his thumb that hold the finger prick on the other side, was bleeding. The blood fill up his glove and when the lady open her eyes, she check her finger for the puncture. When she found out my friend have puncture his own finger, she started to giggles and smiles. even his family that accompany her to the clinic also laugh when they see the incident. =) Frankly said, when she leaving the clinic, a smile was on her face on her way out.

When i review the story, i realize as future doctor, we have to treat the patients hollistically. Basically, what i mean is, sometimes we may treat the disease, but the patient may not satisfy on how we handle them, asking them a lot of questions, doing a PE, multiple puncture for blood, a procedure, prescibing drugs, but did not aware of their feeling, pain and worry for being in the condition . At least they need someone to listen and consult them everytime they in doubt of the condition or the procedure that will be done. Sometimes we cannot treat the disease as in chronic disease like DM and hypertension, but at least, as in the story, the patient have changed her mood. I would be very happy if my patients walks out from my clinic or hospital, with a smile on their face, as they satisfy with my treatment and hospitalization later in future,=)

Lastly, to all of fren, good luck in end of posting exam and SPM exam next week, Study hard, study smart, =)
